Last Week on Chismeando con La Gente: Education

Last Thursday on Chismeando con La Gente, we tackled education.

Co-hosts Jocelyn and Andrea were joined by La Gente’s Editor In Chief, Maria Perez. With Bruin Day on Saturday, April 15th, the three recounted their Bruin Day experiences as hopeful, bright-eyed high school Seniors ready to embark on everything UCLA has to offer.

Michael Reyes, UCLA ’14 Alum and former Editor In Chief of La Gente, joined them via telephone to discuss his work with 826LA, a non-profit “dedicated to supporting students ages 6-18 with their creative and expository writing skills.” Reyes reiterated 826LA’s firm belief that “strong writing skills are fundamental to future success.”

With their work in the communities of Mar Vista and Echo Park, 826LA works towards making college accessible for its students. Such college access programs are crucial in underserved communities. As the Chicana/o educational pipeline indicates, college access varies within our own communities.

Make sure to tune into Chismeando con La Gente on UCLAradio.com every Thursday at 2:00 p.m., where we discuss el chisme that really matters: intersectional feminism, education, equity, and all things social justice.
