Comedians at last Wednesday's Punk House comedy show at the Westside Comedy Theatre used superficial topics such as Facebook, Twilight, vagazzling (yes, that is a portmanteau for bedazzling one's vagina), and even a particularly austere audience member to get viewers to laugh. So, when budding Mexican-American comedian Manuel Zermeno focused his performance on his gay identity, he immediately stood out.

On March 15, 2009, Alonso Chehade, an undocumented immigrant from Peru, was arrested at the US/Canada border for unlawful presence in the United States. After remaining in the detention center for two weeks, Chehade was later released with the assistance of his family, who posted a $7,500 bond to free him from prison.

IDEAS presented a workshop in January explaining the effects of the University of California’s 32% fee hike on undocumented students. High school students and other campus organizations as well as students from San Fernando Valley attended, uniting in an effort to help undocumented students pay tuition, attend college, and graduate with the possibility of continuing their education.

The quarter has been bittersweet for José, the AB 540 freshman. Although attending his dream school, he finds himself in a world of financial insecurity. Like thousands across California, he knows that the UC Regents meeting on Nov. 18-19 will impact his future. If the Regents raise fees yet again, this time by 32%, his dream of becoming a doctor will prove more difficult.

The End of Public Education

Early last summer, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) proposed the Public School Choice plan which will relinquish LAUSD administrative and financial control of over 200 schools. Superintendent Ramon C. Cortines released a statement on Jan. 15 in which he stressed that LAUSD is "encouraging input from all community members who support [their] public schools including parents, guardians, students, teachers and other LAUSD employees."
